THE CAPTAIN

Capt. Byron Shults, MBA
About the Captain
Capt. Byron Shults grew up on the water. Devoting all of his time towards learning and engaging with the ocean, he has specifically focused on his passions for offshore fishing and waterfowl hunting. He has spent over a decade navigating the tricky and shallow waters of the Bogue Sound and out of Beaufort Inlet, into the Atlantic ocean region known as Onslow Bay.

He is a graduate from East Carolina University with a degree in business management, and has gone on to achieve his MBA from Western Colorado University in Outdoor Industry Product Development. He currently holds a USCG 100-ton Master Near Coastal Captains License, and is PADI Advanced Open Water/Nitrox Enriched Air Certified. He solely founded "Going Bogue Outdoors" in order to help others channel their inner passions for fishing and pursuits on the ocean. He has had the pleasure of working under many notable captains and vessels as first mate, as well as serving as captain onboard a private/charter vessel, "Fishy Business", for 7 years, operating the 50-passenger catamaran ferry “Miss Morehead City”, and is the current manager of Sea Tow Crystal Coast.

Over the last decade, he has exponentially grown both his experience and recognition in the industry. He has been an instructor at the Fisherman's Post Fishing School at the Morehead City Convention Center, been a guest on multiple podcasts with Gary Hurley from the Fisherman's Post, as well as provides monthly fishing reports for the area in the monthly magazine editions. He is also part of Chasin’ Tails Outdoors’ charter fleet, running offshore trips for the shop.
