About the Captain
Capt. Byron Shults grew up on the water. Devoting all of his time towards learning and engaging with the ocean, he has specifically focused on his passion for offshore fishing and waterfowl hunting. He has spent over a decade navigating the tricky and shallow waters of the Bogue Sound and out of Beaufort Inlet, into the Atlantic ocean region known as Onslow Bay.
He is a graduate from East Carolina University with a degree in business management, and has gone on to achieve his MBA from Western Colorado University in Outdoor Industry Product Development. He founded "Going Bogue Outdoors" in order to help others channel their inner passions for fishing and pursuits on the ocean. He has had the pleasure of working under many notable captains and vessels as first mate, as well as serving as captain onboard a private/charter vessel, "Fishy Business", for 7 years and has operated a 50-passenger ferry. Over the past 4 years, he has exponentially grown his experience and recognition in the industry. He has been an instructor at the Fisherman's Post Fishing School at the Morehead City Convention Center, been a guest on multiple podcasts with Gary Hurley from the Fisherman's Post, as well as provides monthly fishing reports for the area for the monthly magazine editions.
He also works as a Sea Tow Crystal Coast captain part-time, where his expert navigation and knowledge of inland waters comes into play helping stranded and stuck vessels. He holds his USCG 50-ton Master Near Coastal Captains License, and is PADI Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Enriched Air Certified.
About the Dog
Pura "Vida" Grace is an English chocolate Labrador retriever. She is very passionate about waterfowl hunting, and has been solely trained by Captain Byron in her art of waterfowl retrieving, although favorable instincts run in her bloodline. She has proven to be a valuable asset during hunts for waterfowl clients. Her abilities to retrieve in open water, and ability to be casted blindly on downed fowl, are a stunning display of both her training and stamina. While she enjoys going fishing just as much as the next person, she also enjoys days of relaxation in the workshop and greeting clients returning from fishing or other trips. She is rarely far from the cleaning table when it comes time to clean fish, and is occasionally rewarded for being a "Good Dog".
